Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships: Scholarship Description

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students who display leadership skill and also a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies. This is to promote Canada as a global Centre of excellence in higher learning and research.

Canada’s three federal funding agencies which include;

·        Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

·        Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

·        Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

Canada

Eligibility Countries:

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens

Study Level:

PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) 

Program Period:

Three Years

Areas of Research:

·        Health Research

·        Social Sciences and humanities research

·        Natural sciences and/ or engineering research.

Value of Scholarship:

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships is valued $50, 000 per year for three years.

Number of Awards:

Up to 166 scholarship awards annually

Eligibility:

In order to be eligible for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, the following criteria must be met;

·        Must be nominated by only one Canadian institution which must have received a Vanier CGS quota;

·        Must be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding.

·        Must have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 2021.

·        Must have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by 1 May 2021 if accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s Program); or

·        Must have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by 1 May 2021 if accelerated from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.

·        Must have attained a first-class average, as determined by your institution for its definition of a first-class average, and

·        Must not hold or have held a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC OR SSHRC to undergo or complete a doctoral programme.

Nomination Process

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota (i.e., a predetermined number of applications that can be put forward to the national competition) to host Vanier scholars. Candidates should only seek a nomination from the institution at which they want to study

·        For nominating institutions: Deadline: 3rd November 2020
